As a homeschooling parent I am always looking for activities that will not only educate my children, but also catch their interest. National Environmental Education Week does all of this and more. My children are excited to be a part of a nationwide program that is aimed at helping learn about and protect the planet.
For EE Week 2007, my son decided to sew reusable bags as his direct participation in helping the environment. He passed these bags out to friends and family. This helped to educate folks about how a small step such as using reusable bags at the grocery store can make a big impact on our environment.
We also took a field trip with other homeschoolers to a nearby state park in which endangered fish live. We studied the fish and learned about the circumstances that occurred to cause them to be endangered. Then we took a hike throughout the park to see what other wildlife and plants lived in the same area.
Finally, we tried to evaluate ways in which our energy use could be reduced. We replaced incandescent bulbs at both our home and business with compact fluorescent bulbs. Comparing energy bills before and after showed us how much of a difference the steps we took made in our overall energy use.
National Environmental Education Week is a great way to set aside a little time in our busy lives to remind our children and ourselves about the importance of taking care of our world and the creatures with which we share it. My family and I are looking forward to many more years of National EE Week.
