La Mirada High School

Every year for the past three years the 2,300 students at La Mirada High School in Los Angeles County, California, celebrate an energy-themed National EE Week and Earth Day event.  Science students display renewable energy and environmental projects while state agencies, like the California Coastal Commission exhibit information. The school choir and jazz band perform while students play a variety of games with an eco-theme. See the photos below for just a few of our activities.

12-volt solar photovoltaic panels
Two high school students check out the 12-volt solar photovoltaic panels that are powering a small fan in a model house. The school woodshop built the house, the art department painted it, and a local solar electric company, Energy Efficiency Solar Electric, donated the photovoltaic panels and installed them. Solar oven bakes chocolate chip cookies
A solar oven bakes chocolate chip cookies at La Mirada's Annual EE Week and Earth Day celebration. Students learned that the four "wings" of the oven help reflect sunlight and concentrate it into a small central area. The black inside of the oven, as well as the back pan, help convert the sunlight into heat. The plastic cover helps to trap the solar energy and cook the food. Students also learned that countries that are poor in fuel material due to massive deforestation are benefiting from the use of sun ovens for cooking as well as water sterilization.
